The new impressive gPhone

Google’s Android is the newest release from Google that really does transcend the traditional boundaries of Internet search giant; given Google’s reputation for taking on and beating the biggest in a number of computing related industries, it is not surprising that the Android has been billed by some as an iPhone killer. This is undoubtedly a great chance for Google to take a market share in a very lucrative industry. But have they blown their best chance by releasing something which just isn’t going to make the mark? Read on, dear reader.

The first thing that I want to say is that the gPhone (as it is being called) is not a bad phone. It’s actually quite nice to look at and use; it’s just that the gPhone is not sexy. Maybe Google are staying away from the ‘hip and trendy’ market because they know that Apple have it covered with the iPhone. Maybe they underestimated the importance of sexy.

The phone itself is a T mobile invention: the T Mobile G1. Google’s Android comes into this purely as a platform that controls the phone. This is a collaboration between two really huge players that should have worked so much better. A beater? Probably not. An interesting addition to the market place? Definitely.
